Sköldpaddan och Haren

En dag gjorde en hare narr av en sköldpadda för att den var så långsam.

One day, a hare was making fun of a tortoise for being so slow.

"Kommer du någonsin någonstans?" frågade han med ett hånfullt skratt.

"Do you ever get anywhere?" he asked with a mocking laugh.

"Ja", svarade sköldpaddan, "och jag kommer dit tidigare än du tror. Jag ska köra dig ett lopp och bevisa det."

"Yes," replied the Tortoise, "and I get there sooner than you think. I'll run you a race and prove it."

Haren var mycket road av tanken på att springa ett lopp med sköldpaddan, men för nöjes skull gick han med på det. Så Räven, som hade samtyckt till att fungera som domare, markerade avståndet och startade löparna.

The Hare was much amused at the idea of running a race with the Tortoise, but for the fun of the thing he agreed. So the Fox, who had consented to act as judge, marked the distance and started the runners off.

Haren var snart långt borta från sikte, och för att få sköldpaddan att känna väldigt djupt hur löjligt det var för honom att prova ett lopp med en hare, lade han sig bredvid banan för att ta en tupplur tills sköldpaddan skulle komma ikapp.

The Hare was soon far out of sight, and to make the Tortoise feel very deeply how ridiculous it was for him to try a race with a Hare, he lay down beside the course to take a nap until the Tortoise should catch up.

Sköldpaddan fortsatte under tiden sakta men stadigt och passerade efter en tid platsen där haren sov. Men Haren sov mycket lugnt vidare; och när han äntligen vaknade, var sköldpaddan nära målet. Haren sprang nu som snabbast, men han kunde inte köra om sköldpaddan i tid.

The Tortoise meanwhile kept going slowly but steadily, and, after a time, passed the place where the Hare was sleeping. But the Hare slept on very peacefully; and when at last he did wake up, the Tortoise was near the goal. The Hare now ran his swiftest, but he could not overtake the Tortoise in time.

Långsamt och stadigt vinner loppet.

Slow and steady wins the race.
