French Pronunciation & Grammar Tips

Tackle the most common questions that trip up French beginners — answered simply and clearly.

Why are so many French letters silent?
French has many silent letters, especially at the end of words. Final consonants like "s", "t", "d", and "x" are almost always silent. The letter "h" is nearly always silent too. When in doubt, don't pronounce it!
Vous → "voo" (silent s)
How do I pronounce the French "r"?
The French "r" is a guttural sound made at the back of the throat — not rolled like Spanish. Try gently gargling water to find the right spot. It feels strange at first but becomes natural quickly!
Rouge → "roozh" (throaty r)
What are nasal vowels?
French has nasal vowels where air flows through the nose: "an/en", "in/ain", "on", and "un". They are one of French's most distinctive and beautiful sounds, and worth practising early.
Bon → "bohn" (nasal "on")
What is liaison and when do I use it?
Liaison is when a normally silent final consonant is pronounced before a word starting with a vowel sound. Some are mandatory, some forbidden, and some optional. It gives French its smooth, flowing rhythm.
Les amis → "lay-za-mee"
What is the difference between "tu" and "vous"?
"Tu" is informal — used with friends, family, and children. "Vous" is formal singular (strangers, authority figures) and also the plural "you." When meeting someone new, always use "vous" until invited to switch.
Tu parles / Vous parlez
Do all French nouns have a gender?
Yes — every French noun is either masculine (le, un) or feminine (la, une). Gender affects articles, adjectives, and agreement. Some patterns help (words ending in "-tion" are feminine), but many are simply memorised.
Le livre (m) / La table (f)
