Spanish Pronunciation & Grammar Tips

Tackle the most common questions that trip up Spanish beginners — answered simply and clearly.

How do I pronounce the Spanish "r"?
A single "r" is a quick tap — like the "d" in "ladder" (American English). A double "rr" is a full rolled trill. Practice every day and it'll come naturally!
Pero (but) vs. Perro (dog)
What sound does "ll" make?
It varies by region! In most of Latin America it sounds like the English "y." In parts of Spain and Argentina it's closer to "zh" (like the 's' in measure). In Puerto Rico and many Caribbean countries, "ll" is pronounced like an English "j." All are perfectly correct!
Llave → "yah-veh" / "zhah-veh" / "jah-veh"
How do I pronounce "ñ"?
The "ñ" sounds like "ny" — similar to the "ni" in "onion." It's one of the most iconic sounds in Spanish and unique to the language.
España → "es-PAH-nyah"
Are Spanish vowels different from English?
Yes! Spanish vowels are always short and pure: A (ah), E (eh), I (ee), O (oh), U (oo). They never glide into diphthongs the way English vowels do.
Casa → "KAH-sah"
What is the difference between "ser" and "estar"?
"Ser" is for permanent or defining traits (identity, origin, nature). "Estar" is for temporary states (mood, location, condition). Both mean "to be."
Soy americano / Estoy cansado
What is "voseo" and where is it used?
"Voseo" replaces "tú" with "vos" for informal second-person speech. It's common in Argentina, Uruguay, and much of Central America, with its own verb conjugations.
¿Cómo estás? → ¿Cómo estás vos?
