Portuguese Pronunciation & Grammar Tips

Tackle the most common questions that trip up Portuguese beginners — answered simply and clearly.

What is the difference between Brazilian and European Portuguese?
They're the same language but sound quite different! Brazilian Portuguese is generally more open and vowel-rich, making it easier for beginners. European Portuguese swallows vowels and sounds faster. Both are mutually intelligible.
BR: "obrigado" (oh-bree-GAH-doo) / EU: "obrigado" (oh-bree-GAH-du)
How do nasal vowels work in Portuguese?
Portuguese has distinctive nasal vowels marked with a tilde (~) or followed by "m/n". "ã" sounds like a nasal "ah", and "õ" is a nasal "oh". They're one of the most unique and beautiful features of the language.
Pão (bread) → nasal "ow" sound
How do I pronounce "lh" and "nh"?
"Lh" sounds like the "ll" in the English word "million" — a palatalized L. "Nh" sounds like the Spanish "ñ" or the "ny" in "canyon." Both are common and worth practicing early!
Filho → "FEE-lyoo" / Vinho → "VEE-nyoo"
How is "r" pronounced in Portuguese?
It varies! In Brazil, a single "r" in the middle of a word is often a light tap like in Spanish. But "rr" and an "r" at the start of a word is guttural (like an English "h"). In Portugal, the "r" is similarly back-of-throat.
Rio → "HEE-oo" (Brazilian) / "REE-oo" (mid-word)
What is "você" and when do I use it?
"Você" is the standard "you" in Brazilian Portuguese and takes third-person verb forms. In Portugal, "tu" (informal) and "você" (formal) are both used. In Brazil, "tu" exists too but is most common in certain regions like Rio Grande do Sul.
Você fala / Tu falas
What is "saudade" and can I use it?
"Saudade" describes a deep emotional longing for something or someone loved and lost. It's one of Portuguese's most treasured words and has no direct translation in English. Using it correctly will impress any native speaker!
Tenho saudade de você → "I miss you dearly"
