Italian Pronunciation & Grammar Tips

Tackle the most common questions that trip up Italian beginners — answered simply and clearly.

How do "c" and "g" change before vowels?
Before "e" and "i," the letters "c" and "g" are soft — like "ch" and "j" in English. Before "a," "o," and "u," they are hard. This is one of Italian's most important rules!
Ciao (chow) vs. Cane (KAH-neh)
What are double consonants and why do they matter?
Italian double consonants are pronounced longer and stronger than single ones — and they change the meaning of words! Hold the sound for a beat to get it right.
Nono (ninth) vs. Nonno (grandfather)
How do you pronounce the "gli" sound?
The "gli" combination sounds like the "lli" in the English word "million." It's a palatal lateral that doesn't exist in English, but it comes naturally with practice.
Figlio → "FEE-lyoh" (son)
Are Italian vowels the same as English?
No — Italian vowels are always pure and crisp: A (ah), E (eh), I (ee), O (oh), U (oo). They never glide into diphthongs the way English vowels do. This gives Italian its musical, open sound.
Bello → "BEL-loh" (not "bell-oh")
Do I need to say "io," "tu," "lui" (subject pronouns)?
Not usually! Italian verb endings already tell you who the subject is. Dropping subject pronouns ("pro-drop") sounds more natural. You only use them for emphasis or contrast.
Mangio la pizza (I'm eating pizza)
When do I use "tu" vs. "Lei"?
"Tu" is informal — for friends, family, and peers. "Lei" (capital L) is the formal "you" — used with strangers, professionals, and elders. Using the wrong one can seem rude or overly stiff!
Come stai? (tu) vs. Come sta? (Lei)
