Common French Verbs (Verbes Français Courants)

  • Parler - 'to speak'
  • Manger - 'to eat'
  • Boire - 'to drink'
  • Faire - 'to do/to make'
  • Marcher - 'to walk'
  • Voir - 'to see/watch'
  • Être - 'to be'
  • Écrire - 'to write'
  • Avoir - 'to have'
  • Acheter - 'to buy'
  • Dormir - 'to sleep'
  • Travailler - 'to work'

Notice how many of these verbs end with -er. This is the case for over 90% of all verbs in the French language.

The other possible verb endings are: -re or -ir. Ex: 'boire' and 'dormir.

Colors (Couleurs)

  • Rouge - 'Red'
  • Orange - 'Orange'
  • Jaune - 'Yellow'
  • Vert/e - 'Green'
  • Bleu/e - 'Blue'
  • Voilet/te - 'Purple'
  • Noir/e - 'Black'
  • Blanc/he - 'White'
  • Gris/e - 'Gray'
  • Brun - 'Brown'
  • Clair - 'Light'
  • Foncé - 'Dark'

Note that some of these colors will change their endings whether or not they are describing something femenine or masculine. For example, 'The green car' would be 'La voiture verte', however, 'The green tree' would be 'L'arbre vert'.

Days, Weeks, and Months (Jours, Semaines, et Mois)

  • Lundi - 'Monday'
  • Mardi - 'Tuesday'
  • Mercredi - 'Wednesday'
  • Jeudi - 'Thursday'
  • Vendredi - 'Friday'
  • Samedi - 'Saturday'
  • Dimanche - 'Sunday'
  • Jour - 'Day'
  • Semaine - 'Week'
  • Mois - 'Month'
  • Année - 'Year'
  • Décennie - 'Decade'
  • Janvier - 'January'
  • Février - 'February'
  • Mars - 'March'
  • Avril - 'April'
  • Mai - 'May'
  • Juin - 'June'
  • Julliet - 'July'
  • Août - 'August'
  • Septembre - 'September'

Notice how many of the months of the year are very similar to English. This is because both French and English share many of their roots with Latin.
