Common Spanish Verbs (Verbos Comúnes en Español)

  • Hablar - 'to speak'
  • Comer - 'to eat'
  • Beber - 'to drink'
  • Hacer - 'to do/to make'
  • Caminar - 'to walk'
  • Ver - 'to see/watch'
  • Ser - 'to be'
  • Estar - 'to be'
  • Tener - 'to have'
  • Comprar - 'to buy'
  • Dormir - 'to sleep'
  • Trabajar - 'to work'

Notice how both 'Ser' and 'Estar' mean 'to be', however, they are used in different contexts. Typically speaking, Ser is used to describe things which are permanent and Estar is used to describe temporary things.

Examples: 'Yo soy alto.' / 'Yo estoy muy cansado.' - Being tall is a permanent feature, while being sleepy is typically not permament.

Colors (Colores)

  • Rojo - 'Red'
  • Naranja - 'Orange'
  • Amarillo - 'Yellow'
  • Verde - 'Green'
  • Azul - 'Blue'
  • Morado - 'Purple'
  • Negro - 'Black'
  • Blanco - 'White'
  • Gris - 'Gray'
  • Marrón - 'Brown'
  • Claro - 'Light'
  • Oscuro - 'Dark'

Note that while some of these colors end in either -a or -o, if they are describing a subject which is masculine or feminine, they may change their endings. For example, the Spanish word for 'white' is Blanco, but if you are talking about a house, it would be: 'La casa blanca'.

Days, Weeks, and Months (Días, Semanas, y Meses)

  • Lunes - 'Monday'
  • Martes - 'Tuesday'
  • Miércoles - 'Wednesday'
  • Jueves - 'Thursday'
  • Viernes - 'Friday'
  • Sábado - 'Saturday'
  • Domingo - 'Sunday'
  • Día - 'Day'
  • Semana - 'Week'
  • Mes - 'Month'
  • Año - 'Year'
  • Década - 'Decade'
  • Enero - 'January'
  • Febrero - 'Ferbuary'
  • Marzo - 'March'
  • Abril - 'April'
  • Mayo - 'May'
  • Junio - 'June'
  • Julio - 'July'
  • Agosto - 'August'
  • Septiembre - 'September'
  • Octubre - 'October'
  • Noviembre - 'November'
  • Diciembre - 'December'

Notice how many of the months of the year are very similar to English. This is because both Spanish and English share many of their roots with Latin.
