A Tartaruga e a Lebre

Um dia uma lebre zombou da tartaruga por ser tão lenta.

A Hare was making fun of the Tortoise one day for being so slow.

"Você já chegou a algum lugar?" ele perguntou com uma risada zombeteira.

"Do you ever get anywhere?" he asked with a mocking laugh.

"Sim", respondeu a Tartaruga, "e eu chego lá mais cedo do que você pensa. Vou dar uma volta e mostrar a você."

"Yes," replied the Tortoise, "and I get there sooner than you think. I'll run you a race and prove it."

A Lebre se divertiu muito com a ideia de fazer uma corrida com a Tartaruga, mas por diversão, ele concordou. Então a Raposa, que concordou em atuar como juiz, marcou a distância e colocou os corredores em seu caminho.

The Hare was much amused at the idea of running a race with the Tortoise, but for the fun of the thing he agreed. So the Fox, who had consented to act as judge, marked the distance and started the runners off.

A Lebre logo desapareceu, e para que a Tartaruga sentisse profundamente o quão ridículo era para ele tentar uma corrida com uma Lebre, ele se deitou na lateral do campo para tirar uma soneca até que a Tartaruga o alcançasse.

The Hare was soon far out of sight, and to make the Tortoise feel very deeply how ridiculous it was for him to try a race with a Hare, he lay down beside the course to take a nap until the Tortoise should catch up.

Enquanto isso, a Tartaruga avançava devagar, mas com firmeza, e, depois de um tempo, passou pelo lugar onde a Lebre dormia. Mas a Lebre continuou dormindo muito pacificamente; e quando finalmente acordou, a Tartaruga estava perto do gol. A Lebre agora correu o mais rápido possível, mas não conseguiu alcançar a Tartaruga a tempo."

The Tortoise meanwhile kept going slowly but steadily, and, after a time, passed the place where the Hare was sleeping. But the Hare slept on very peacefully; and when at last he did wake up, the Tortoise was near the goal. The Hare now ran his swiftest, but he could not overtake the Tortoise in time.

Lento e constante ganha a corrida.

Slow and steady wins the race.
